The result of a passion and a family that believes in and has remained faithful to the land, Perricone Assuli has an intense ruby colour with purple reflections. The nose offers intense aromas of ripe red fruit, graphite and violet. On the palate it is balanced and is accompanied by soft tannins. Perricone is a historic vine, the most important and widespread in the provinces of Palermo and Trapani at the end of the nineteenth century. Grown today almost exclusively on its chosen land in western Sicily, it is transformed into a structured and at the same time fragrant red wine. Perricone is also a difficult variety to vinify, due to the intense tannins. For this reason, “selection” is the first watchword, “low yields” is the second, supporting the natural predisposition to moderate productivity. With it Assuli has given an unparalleled drive to this DOC and to this area. Today, Perricone is Assul’s gamble: bringing it to the attention of the public, engaging in the promotion of the terroirs that host it and the recovery of the ‘relics’, avoiding the extinction of extraordinary vines that are the true identity of this corner of Sicily. But the audacity of the winery does not stop there: Assuli has already pushed upwards by betting on high hills. “Scorace, 20 hectares within a natural area at an unusual altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Here a selection is already in place that has allowed the creation of new Perricone vineyards, the first plants that over time will give life to the maximum expression of Assuli’s originality and character. A chosen area, of great potential, which hides the secret of a courageous viticulture, combined with the contemporary wisdom of obtaining the highest quality.” – explains an excited Roberto Caruso, chairman of the Winery –.
Yet another curiosity: the historical roots also emerge in the name that pays homage to Orlando Furioso, Ludovico Ariosto’s epic chivalric poem. It seals all the love of the paladin Orlando for the beautiful and fleeting Angelica, an unrequited love that will lead him to madness. The torment of jealousy will make him ‘furious’, with an enveloping and passionate temperament just like the Assuli wine.
